Enjoy Your Walks and Staying Safe

We offer a great range of walks in terms of distance, terrain, pace, ascent and interest.

Our walk descriptions and grading system are designed to help you make the right choices for you.

Your safety is important to us and to ensure that you have the most enjoyable experience on our walks, please take note of the following guidance.  Some walks will have more specific guidance, please check the Eventbrite descriptions.

- Please take personal responsibility for ensuring that you are physically fit enough to take part in the walks that you have selected and that you have appropriate clothing and equipment

- For all walks, walking boots/shoes are essential (no trainers please)

- Long trousers are advisable, due to overgrown, narrow footpaths

- Carry both sun protection and wet weather protection

- Carry sufficient water for the length of the walk

- Take high energy snacks or, for longer walks, more substantial meals

- In the interest of the safety of all our walkers, walk leaders will exercise their right to refuse to take walkers who are ill-equipped.

Timing - please arrive at the meeting point at least 10 minutes before the start of each walk. Walks will commence at the given time, and unfortunately, we are unable to wait for any late arrivals.

Parking - most car parks in the area are now either Pay and Display or ANPR charged.  It is your responsibility to check your car park and pay as appropriate. The postcode details listed for each walk are the starting points and may or may not be close to parking; please ensure you leave enough time to locate suitable parking before the start of your walk. Please find below QR codes to scan for parking information.

Children and young people aged under 18 are welcome on most of our walks up to an including 10 miles, but must be accompanied by an adult with parental responsibility. There may be some restrictions on some walks and this will be specified on the individual walk information.  We recognise that in exceptional cases, young people aged under 18 may wish to complete distances over 10 miles and this will be considered by the walk leader on an individual basis. Please contact us to discuss.

Dogs - Due to the amount of livestock in the Gorge and surrounding areas dogs are NOT permitted on walks unless specifically stated that they are dog friendly.  Walk Leaders choose whether the walks are suitable for dogs, taking into consideration the environment, obstacles e.g. stiles and walker numbers.

All Dog Walkers are asked to read and follow the Countryside Code and How to enjoy great dog walks responsibly.  A farmer can shoot a dog that is attacking or chasing livestock. They may not be liable to compensate the dog’s owner.

Special rules apply on Open Access Land. Between 1 March and 31 July (the main breeding season for ground nesting birds), dogs will be kept on a short lead, even if there is no livestock on the land. This is now a legal requirement.

Keeping dogs under control and in sight

Dogs will be on short leads at all times on all walks unless agreed by the Walk Leader and when:

  • livestock, horses, other animals are present in fields

  • notices ask for dogs on leads

  • approaching access to fields and roads

Dogs can be let off leads if the group is  threatened by livestock or horses.

A safe and enjoyable experience for all

Our dog friendly walks are likely to have  both dog owners, non-dog walkers and children present. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all, we kindly ask that dog owners:

  • follow the guidance of the Walk Leader during the walk

  • ensure their dogs are able to keep up with the pace and length of the walk

  • carry food, water and a drinking bowl for their dog

  • ensure their dogs are not aggressive towards other dogs or in large groups of people

  • are confident that their dogs have excellent recall if allowed off the lead and can be kept under control and in sight

  • clean up their dog’s poo and dispose of it in a public waste bin, at the earliest opportunity.

Walk Leaders and Dog Walks

Even on dog friendly walks, the walk leader may restrict the number at the start of the walk, if they consider it to be appropriate for the safety of other walkers. If conditions reach 25 degrees, then dogs will not be allowed on walks, as it will be unsafe for them.

Walk Leaders may allow dogs with excellent recall or trained to walk at heal off a short lead only where conditions allow and when they are sure the dog can be trusted.

During the walk, the walk leader may ask for dogs to be put on short leads when:

  • a large number of walkers are passing through narrow paths

  • on slippery sections of the route

  • approaching access to fields and roads

  • there are a large number of walkers on the walk

  • walking in single file is required

  • dogs may be a trip hazard (e.g. if single file needed, or walkers in a close cluster group)

Owners may sometimes be asked to walk at the back of the group so as not to inconvenience others (trip hazards) or because other walkers are anxious around dogs or children are walking with the group.

General Disclaimer: The organisers give no warranties, either express or implied, regarding the availability, suitability or safety of the walks described on this website.  Participation in the walks will be at your own risk.
